Trees, landscaping and other green infrastructure elements are continually designed and constructed in most roadways.

Official description

Explore opportunities to better integrate green infrastructure such as robust street trees and rain gardens in road rights of way, including supportive maintenance programs and budgets
(Full action name in the CCAS)

Description

This action is aimed at better incorporating natural elements into the design and construction of roads and other transportation infrastructure. This can include exploring ways to prioritize additional space to plant trees and other vegetation along roadsides, and create rain gardens to capture and filter stormwater runoff. Opportunities to expand maintenance programs and budgets to support the ongoing care of these additional green infrastructure elements will also need to be considered. The goal of these efforts is to improve the resilience and sustainability of transportation infrastructure, while also providing environmental, human health and aesthetic benefits. This action is cross-departmental, with strong collaboration required between PRC and ENG.
