Official description
Description
Surrey is already experiencing the impacts of climate change, including flooding, storms, extreme heat, and wildfire smoke. These impacts can be intensified by changes in land use and development. For example, dense neighborhoods with extensive hard surfaces retain heat and limit rainwater infiltration, leading to higher temperatures during heat events and an increased risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
This action involves reviewing current risk assessments to identify areas prone to climate risks and exploring opportunities to mitigate these risks through land use planning and redevelopment. Land use plans provide a framework for the design and development of Surrey neighborhoods and can incorporate measures such as shading, permeable surfaces, and green infrastructure to address climate vulnerabilities. As properties are redeveloped, there is an opportunity to encourage—or require—additional mitigation measures, such as enhanced stormwater management systems, cooler surface materials, and other features that increase resilience to climate impacts.
