Official description

Pilot complete street retrofits on key corridors, providing protected walking/cycling facilities and green infrastructure such as rain gardens and street trees
(Full action name in the CCAS)

Description

City of Surrey has a large road network that has been developed over decades of continuous growth. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the roads were built during a time when automobiles were prioritized over walking and cycling. This has resulted in many neighborhoods lacking safe walking and cycling infrastructure and further encourages the use of private vehicles for daily trips.

Referred to as "complete streets" this pilot program will identify and retrofit key corridors to provide protected cycling, walking and green infrastructure so that everyone can access the roadway, regardless if you are a pedestrian, cyclist, or drive an automobile. In some cases, this will mean a reallocation of parking or driving lanes to accommodate all modes. Using low-cost tactical treatments, these retrofits can be implemented quickly without the need for significant construction.

Retrofitting the street to provide environmental benefits is also key to this action. Including rain gardens to capture and clean storm water runoff and increasing the planting of street trees will not only make the street more enjoyable but also more sustainable, helping the City reach it's climate goals.
