Official description

Advocate to the Province to develop a strategy for managing irrigation and stream flows for improved climate resilience
(Full action name in the CCAS)

Description

Water use for irrigation can have significant impacts to the local environment. As climate change intensifies – bringing sea level rise, increased precipitation, localized flooding, warmer temperatures, and prolonged drought – it is crucial for municipalities to better understand and address the complex interactions between climate change and the water cycle. For example, rising evaporation rates can deplete local groundwater levels, exacerbating water scarcity.

Given the regional nature of these challenges, collaboration across municipal boundaries is essential. This action involves City staff advocating to the Province for the development of an irrigation and stream flow strategy that incorporates climate resilience. Such a strategy would support sustainable water use, protect local ecosystems, and ensure water resources are managed effectively in the face of a changing climate.
