Official description

Look for opportunities to restore and daylight creeks and riparian areas in partnership with developers
(Full action name in the CCAS)

Description

Surrey is home to approximately 1,400 kilometers of urban watercourses that provide critical spawning and rearing habitats for several species of salmon and trout, as well as diverse aquatic and terrestrial wildlife native to British Columbia. These watercourses are vital to the region's biodiversity and ecological health.

To protect these sensitive habitats, the City employs a watercourse classification map to assess streams based on their habitat value. Additionally, Integrated Stormwater Management Plans (ISMPs) are developed for new growth areas, addressing drainage infrastructure needs while balancing land use planning, flood and erosion protection, stormwater engineering, and environmental conservation.

This action will involve exploring innovative approaches to restore degraded creeks and riparian areas through partnerships with developers during the redevelopment process. By integrating restoration efforts into urban planning, the City aims to enhance aquatic habitats, improve water quality, and support Surrey’s biodiversity goals while fostering collaboration with the development community.
