Official description
Description
Coastal and urban flooding, landslides, and storms causing property damage are already occurring in the region and are expected to increase in frequency and severity. One key way the City can prepare for these impacts is by updating land development regulations to ensure homes are built in low-risk areas.
This action will involve reviewing current risk assessments to identify areas prone to climate risks and exploring opportunities within land development regulations to mitigate these risks. One effective tool is Development Permit Areas (DPAs), which can be designated to protect development from hazardous conditions. Development within DPAs must adhere to additional requirements that safeguard people, property, and the natural environment from risks such as unstable slopes or flooding.
The City currently has DPAs in place for steep slopes and flood-prone areas. These can be updated and expanded to incorporate the latest climate risk assessments and projections, ensuring ongoing protection against evolving climate hazards.
