Description
Metro Vancouver oversees waste reduction, recycling planning, and the operation of solid waste facilities across the region. The Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (ISWRMP), last updated in 2011, outlines goals and objectives for managing garbage and recyclable materials. Currently, Metro Vancouver is reviewing the ISWRMP as part of a planned update. This process includes engaging with local governments, including the City, to explore ways to accelerate waste reduction and diversion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote a circular economy. A circular economy focuses on avoiding waste by redesigning, repairing, and repurposing products and materials.

This action involves City staff actively participating in the ISWRMP update process led by Metro Vancouver. The aim is to identify strategies to further reduce waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions while fostering a circular economy for Surrey and the region.
