Official description
Description
Construction and demolition materials make up the largest waste category sent to disposal in the region, with demolition accounting for the majority. This waste can be mitigated through the adoption of low-waste technologies and sustainable construction practices.
For example, off-site prefabrication protects materials from weather exposure, minimizes waste, and maximizes the use of leftover materials. Additionally, choosing durable materials with recycled content, salvaging materials through deconstruction, and prioritizing recyclable materials all contribute to reducing waste.
To further decrease construction and demolition waste and associated emissions, the City can explore opportunities to incentivize low-waste alternatives through the permitting process, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices and materials.
