Official description

Advocate to utilities and the Province of British Columbia for energy prices that support affordable zero-carbon energy
(Full action name in the CCAS)

Description

In British Columbia, 98% of electricity is generated from renewable sources, making the province’s electrical grid one of the cleanest in the world. Meeting provincial and municipal climate targets will require a transition from fossil fuels to electricity across most sectors. However, for hard-to-electrify applications - such as certain industrial processes and long-haul freight - alternative zero-carbon energy sources like hydrogen will also play a critical role.

Supporting this transition will require thoughtful rate planning and policy design to ensure zero-carbon energy remains affordable and continues to incentivize widespread adoption.

The City will advocate to energy utilities and the Province for policies and programs that support affordable access to zero-carbon energy, enabling Surrey residents and businesses to transition away from fossil fuels and contribute to climate goals.
